We are the FIRST Tech Challenge Team #5466, better known as The Combustible Lemons, from Iowa’s Davenport West High School. The members in our team range from 9th to 12th grade and they each bring their own level of experience. We allow rookies to join our team, allowing for the continuation of the Lemons. This website shows what we are doing with our robot, community outreach, both locally and globally, and shows our journey through the season.
We make robots to compete in FIRST Tech Challenge, one of FIRST’s four programs, and we share what we’ve made with our community. Each year the game is different and we have to engineer a solution to the problem. The one aspect of competing that has never changed is our stellar community outreach efforts.
Our strong sustainability has allowed us to continue the Lemon legacy for a long time. The 2016-2017 season will be our sixth year (we started in 2011)! Through the years, we have seen all founding team members leave for college, with new members filling the void they leave. Our team’s alumni still come to mentor our current members. Our team has gone to the FTC World Championship three times, with the second being a part of elimination matches. Also, in 2015, we were in the Iowa finalist alliance at the North Super Regional.
FIRST is a non-profit organization that was founded to help students in grades k-12 learn about Science, Technology, Math, and Engineering and prepare students for careers in these areas. Even if the student does not choose a S.T.E.M. related career, what they have learned will still be very helpful. Many well known companies including John Deere, Alcoa, and Rockwell Collins, to name a few, support areas of the program and teams in the programs.
